Clergy Sex Abuse

Clergy Sex Abuse

Since a 2002 Boston Globe investigation uncovered widespread sexual abuse by clergy within the Catholic Church, countless victims of sexual abuse have come forward with their own stories. It’s become clear that abuse has happened within many of our trusted institutions- churches, schools, youth groups, and the foster care system.

In response to the increasing number of victims finally coming forward, many decades after the abuse happened, several states have passed laws to extend the statute of limitations around sex abuse and allow victims to seek justice in civil court.

7 states around the nation have passed so-called “revival windows” that allow victims  to bring otherwise expired claims against their abusers for a limited amount of time. These states include:

New York: revival window open until August 2020
Arizona: revival window open until the end of 2020
Washington, DC: revival window open until May 2021
New Jersey: revival window open until 2021
North Carolina: revival window open until January 2022
California: revival window open until January 2023
Vermont: no time restrictions on filing claims
